A Letter Every Day

A Letter Every Day

In February, I’m going to take part in InCoWriMo (International Correspondence Writing Month). So what is InCoWriMo? Well, it’s a challenge to write and mail or hand-deliver one letter, card, note or postcard every day during the month of February.

In an age where social media and email rules correspondence, there’s nothing quite like receiving a personal letter, card, note or postcard via snail mail. I love snail-mail and I think my only challenge will be working out who to send things to! I have a couple of penpals, there’s a friend’s birthday and if I visit any places of interest I’ll be sure to pick up some postcards to send.

So if I’m still struggling, who else could I send a letter or postcard to?

Postcrossing – Postcrossing is a project which allows you to send and receive postcards from random people across the world. For every postcard you send to someone, you’ll get one back from somebody else. It’s wonderful as you don’t know where you’ll get a postcard from next.

More Love Letters – This is a project to write and mail letters to strangers all over the world. People nominate someone in need of a love letter bundle, the MLL team pick stories that resonate and then you get the chance to write a letter and mail it in.

Letter Writers Alliance – Join the LWA! The Letter Writers Alliance is a member-based organisation dedicated to keeping letter writing alive. Why not join and request a penpal?

The InCoWriMo website also has a list of 28 people who would love to receive letters (including British Royalty and a best-selling author!).

I’m a member of a penpal group on Facebook, so I may submit a post there asking if anyone would like a letter as part of InCoWriMo.

Other ideas are to send a letter to a long lost friend or family member and reconnect with them via snail mail or even just jot down a note for a friend.

Don’t forget it’s St Valentine’s Day in February, so you could send a certain someone a Valentine’s Card!

Visit InCoWriMo.org for more information.

Will you be joining in with InCoWriMo? Would you like to be added to my list of people to send a letter or card to during InCoWriMo?

I’ve enjoyed writing letters all my life and had several pen-pals over the years. I still have a few people I write to (including Tracy at Pen and Paper), but I don’t know if I could come up with a month’s worth of recipients. I’ll have to check out the links you included – they sound quite interesting!

Wow, this is such an amazing project! I love the whole idea. I used to send postcards through Postcrossing. I missed doing that! I love writing letters, postcards, I think it’s such a nice and personal way of communicating 🙂

What a great project. I’ve loved writing letters all my life but as you say, email and text seem to have taken over these days so I’ve just signed up for a pen pal and I’m looking forward to getting to know her through letter writing.

Hello Nikki, what a lovely idea, there is nothing nicer than receiving a ‘proper’ letter.
Another idea is to send a letter to the ‘future you’ telling her all about you as you are now. Write it, post it and put it away in a draw to open at some point in the future – you chose when.

I’ve been writing a letter/card/postcards a day since 2011. I write to people of all ages! Aunts, uncle, cousins, siblings, high school friends, elderly friends, etc. When people find out that I write they ask me to write to them as well. I enjoy sending birthday cards to the young ones because many of them have never received anything in the mail! I also write thank you notes.

    Good luck.

I love this idea. I’ve always been a fan of handwritten letters. They’re so much more heartwarming than emails and texts.

  7. Hi Nikki,

I’m with just about everyone else in thinking that this is a great idea, although I would fall very short of recipients for my letters and cards.

Postcards sound like a good way of connecting with people you don’t necessarily know too well and the cards themselves are quite collectible these days, especially as they are a declining means of contact.

I’m off to check out the links you left, especially postcrossing, although the cost of postage might be the only downfall.

I hope that all is well with you 🙂

Love this idea, I used to write letters to friends years ago. I then got idle and used text/email like everyone else. I still have pretty paper and cards somewhere, I am going to dig them out and surprise an old friend.

Hmm, a lovely idea. I’d once have jumped at the opportunity but things being as they are I don’t feel I can really commit.

It saddens me that I now correspond with friends less and less by letter. Its sad but true that as well as time the cost of postage plays a big part in this decision.
