Free-from Chocolatey Heaven

Free-from Chocolatey Heaven

I’ve begun a quest to find some tasty dairy-free “milk” chocolate… Something which tastes similar to proper milk chocolate (like Cadburys or Milka). I’ve yet to find any, but who knows, maybe it’s out there?

Booja Booja Hazelnut Chocolate TrufflesAnyway, what I did find was this small box of chocolatey goodness. Booja Booja Hazelnut Chocolate Truffles are organic, dairy-free, gluten-free and soya-free, so one would assume taste free… So wrong. Booja Booja Hazelnut Chocolate Truffles are simply divine! The more of them I eat the more I fall in love with them!

You must understand, I’m a big lover of chocolate (who isn’t?), but being lactose-free means it’s generally a no-go area. Free-from chocolate generally tastes horrid or, at least, the stuff I’ve come across does. So, when I picked up this small box of Booja Booja Hazelnut Chocolate Truffles for £6.99 in a local health food shop, I was taking a bit of a risk. I say a bit of a risk because I’ve tasted Booja Booja’s dairy-free ice cream before and that was pretty tasty too.

Yes, the price is a little steep for a small box of 9 chocolates, but they really are worth it, because, as my favourite boyband once sang, I found heaven. These chocolates really are tasty. The hazelnut truffle is smooth with tiny pieces of hazelnut inside and you get a lovely velvety, chocolate hit.

Booja Booja Hazelnut Chocolate Truffles are now my favourite chocolates, but I need to check out the rest of their range, especially their special edition Truffles Selection No. 2.

So now if anyone would like to buy me a gift, they know what to get me! (Hint, hint!).

Aww, glad you found a chocolate that is actually tasty and doesn’t have any of the ingredients that you can’t eat! That’s practically a one-in-a-million kind of find!

I don’t know that much about what goes into making chocolate, but if I’m not mistaken, doesn’t dark chocolate not have any milk in it? Or am I wrong?

I think it’s dependent on the manufacturers, but most dark chocolate doesn’t have milk in (though Cadbury’s Bournville Dark Chocolate is made on the same manufacturing line as milk chocolate, so not suitable for someone with a milk allergy). I’m just not a fan of dark chocolate, I prefer my chocolate sweeter.

I’m not really a chocoholic (horrors!), so my taste is not particularly discerning when it comes to that. Now that I’m dairy-free, I normally use unsweetened cocoa powder when I need chocolate flavor in something. For my chocolate chip cookies, though, I use a brand of chips called “Enjoy Life” that are soy, dairy, nut, and gluten free. They’re delicious!

These are lovely truffles but for the price I find that I would rather make my own, which are just as nice.

Have you tried the new ice creams sold at Sainsbury’s? They are by Swedish Glace, and you get five small chocolate-covered strawberry ice creams in a box. I highly recommend.

Also, here is a quick dairy-free home-truffle recipe you can give a go – just whiz one packet of oreos into crumbs in a food processor, then add half a tub of dairy-free plain/original cream cheese (found at any health or vegan store) and whiz again. Spoon out into balls. You can coat/decorate them, or just eat as is. These are a staple I make for gifts, recipe taken from Hannah Banana Bakery.

Yes, Swedish Glace has been around for a long time (bought by Walls fairly recently). I love the new chocolate-covered strawberry ice creams, I just wish they were larger! 🙂

I can’t eat Oreos due to the wheat content… Their UK website also suggests they’re not suitable for a lactose or dairy-free diet due to cross contact of milk (though I’m sure it’s very minimal). The truffles do sound nice though.

I love Booja Booja! I actually have two boxes with me right now :S it was my birthday recently and got gifted a couple of boxed to my absolute delight!

  6. Hi Nikki,

I’m definitely still a Cadbury’s Dairy Milk fan, despite the fact that most lines are now produced outside of the UK!

If dark chocolate was the only thing available, I would definitely have no trouble at all in giving it up … maybe that would be the best thing for me and would solve my ‘sweet tooth’ issue!

I have tasted a few of the ‘free from’ ranges, when an ‘everything intolerant’ work colleague, has been kind enough to share her spoils – although I’m not sure that kind is really the right word, given the disgusting taste some of her offerings have.

It is good that you have found a make of chocolate that you actually enjoy, all you need to do now is wait until they have a special offer and stock up as much as you can 🙂
