On the way back from Stokesay Castle last weekend, we decided to drop by Clun Castle.

Situated on the edge of the small town of Clun in Shropshire, the 13th-century castle keep perches on a rocky mound. The castle has been ruinous since as early as the 16th-century. I’d have loved to have seen it in its heydey though as there’s not much left of it now.

Clun Castle is an English Heritage property, but it’s free to visit and open during daylight hours. However, do be aware that the castle is not very accessible for those with mobility issues.

Poet A.E. Housman once wrote “Clunton and Clunbury, Clungunford and Clun are the quietest places under the sun” and Clun is very much a sleepy little town unless you visit during the Green Man Festival or the Carnival! It’s worth while taking a wander around the town’s narrow streets before or after a visit to the castle.

Stokesay Castle is a short drive away, with Montgomery Castle and Powis Castle just a little further in the opposite direction.

Even in ruins I’m drawn to places like this. Castles, priories, cathedrals, churches… I love the architecture of them all.
Nice Triumph you slipped in there, too. 🙂

They’re lovely places, aren’t they?

There may not be much of it left now but I think we’re so lucky to have places like these to visit, there’s so much history here.
Nikki
Definitely.

Wow. I love this. I would love to take my son to go exploring around here. He would love to see the ruins, and then go home and try to recreate it.

Hello Nikki, it looks like my sort of place, thank you for sharing the photographs.

These pictures are stunning, Nikki! I’ve always wanted to visit Wales, so these photos sing to my heart. Old castles are always so photogenic, especially on sunny days. 🙂
Nikki
This is actually just over the border in England, but we have some very similar places here in Wales too 🙂
