My niece, on a sleepover at my place, wants to know what we’re doing tomorrow… In other words, she’s giving me a subtle hint that she would like to go on an adventure. What to do on a Sunday morning…
I know!
Just a few days ago, Caffi Clywedog shared their new look menus on Facebook and I practically drooled over them. I knew my niece would too! The new menus feature ice cream sundaes, ice cream waffles and flavoured hot chocolates, all plant-based which makes this dairy-free person very happy.
So, on Sunday morning I drive the three of us (me, my niece and my mum) to Caffi Clywedog, a plant-based cafe above Clywedog Dam, near Llanidloes. Caffi Clywedog quite possibly has some of the best views you’ll ever see from a cafe. You can see for miles across Mid Wales, and looking down you’ll see Llyn Clywedog (Clywedog Reservoir) and its dam, as well as the remains of Bryntail Lead Mine.
We place our order and head upstairs, deciding to eat indoors as there’s a bit of a chill in the spring air. It isn’t long before our ice cream sundaes arrive at our table. A Strawberry Supreme each for Mum & me (2 scoops of vanilla ice cream, 2 scoops of strawberry ice cream, squirty cream, strawberry sauce, a fizzy strawberry lace and a strawberry) and a Biscoff sundae for my niece (2 scoops of vanilla ice cream, 2 scoops of salted caramel ice cream, squirty cream, Biscoff sauce, a Biscoff biscuit and Biscoff sprinkle).
At just before 11 am, some might say it’s too early in the day to be eating ice cream, but who cares?! We devour our ice cream sundaes! It’s a real treat for me as I usually have to watch on as others eat ice cream, but places like Caffi Clywedog mean I can join in and enjoy a delicious treat.
I debate ordering a Mint Hot Chocolate as it has been years since I had one but decide I’ll have one on a return visit. (I’m sure I’ll have to take my nephew up there soon!).
Next door to Caffi Clywedog is Radiate Arts, a not-for-profit community arts charity. Their hub is a centre for creative workshops and community events. This is reflected upstairs at Caffi Clywedog with several art pieces. Caffi Clywedog also hosts a weekly craft group for people to bring along with craft projects and craft with like-minded people.
We take a look at Clywedog and its dam from the viewing point, something I’ve done countless times, yet the view still amazes me.
My niece wants to know what we’re doing next, so I asked what she’d like to do. We can drive around Llyn Clywedog (something everyone should do at least once in a lifetime) or we could visit Bryntail Lead Mine. She wants to explore Bryntail Lead Mine, so we head back down the hill to the ruins.

Wow! The views are amazing, that’s definitely a drive we need to make when we visit our friends in North Wales again.
There is also no such time as too early for ice cream, especially when it is a special occasion, like a visiting niece.
I particularly like the look of the Biscoff sundae, but was just wondering if your niece made any comment about the plant based, dairy free ingredients, as tasting any different to her usual ice cream brands? I would probably give it a try nonetheless 🙂
I would definitely be taking a look at the arts charity too, although I would more than likely be doing that one alone.
To be honest, I didn’t mention it to her that the ice cream was plant-based, I think she only knew because I was eating ice cream. She really enjoyed hers and I don’t think you could tell the difference.
