No April Fool

No April Fool

Regular readers will know that Dad won a competition for Gadget Show Live tickets in our local newspaper. However the tickets weren’t sent out in time (rendering them useless) and they actually arrived on April Fool’s Day! The local newspaper in question refused to send out a replacement prize, but we weren’t going to let it lie.

Commenters on the blog post advised mentioning the Advertising Standards Agency to the newspaper, and so a couple of phone calls later Dad received an apology and two complimentary tickets to the BBC Gardeners’ World Live and Good Food Summer Show in June. He’s even got the tickets in hand already, so we’ve no worries about them not arriving in time!

Complimentary Tickets

Apparently, only two people (Dad and one other person) entered the competition to win tickets to the Gadget Show Live. I do hope the other winner got an alternative prize, too.

Some people might’ve let it go, but I wasn’t having a local newspaper conning an elderly gentleman out of his competition prize. So, many thanks to everyone who commented on the blog post. Your advice paid off!

I’m so glad you pursued the matter aggressively and that they came through in the end! (and like you, hope they made it right with the other entrant as well)

I sometimes find it difficult to “complain”, but when I do, companies often compensate with a replacement – or at the least with discount coupons.

Hope your dad enjoys the show in June. Who knows, it might turn out to be even better than the event he missed!

That’s good news. It’s a shame that you had to mention the Advertising Standards Agency though before the newspaper would rectify the situation, they should know better. On the plus side, I’m sure your dad will enjoy Gardener’s World Live, I’ve been to a couple of shows and really enjoyed it. I hope he has a lovely day.

  3. Leta says:

Amazing! Good job on not letting it go 🙂 Hopefully, the other man didn’t let it go either. I just really hate companies who do things like this. That’s very rude and unprofessional from their side.

That’s such good news, publications shouldn’t run competitions if they can’t deliver the good in time! Hope he enjoys his day!

  5. Hi Nikki,

I do hope that your dad and his guest, enjoy their newly arranged day out. Not the same as the show he originally applied for I know, but this show does sound very good.

Good for you in standing your ground and defending your dad, it’s just a shame you needed to go quite so far before the newspaper saw sense!
