You might wonder why the 1960s song ‘Sugar, Sugar’ by The Archies has been going around my head for the past couple of weeks. Well, I’ve fallen in love with this cutie pie…
I mean, how couldn’t I? Just look at her! It was love at first sight.
Sugar is a ragamuffin cat who found herself being looked after by the wonderful Shropshire Cat Rescue after being stressed out in her previous home.
Shropshire Cat Rescue are having open days on the first two Saturdays of each month (between midday and 4pm) until September this year. So on the first Saturday of May I headed over to Shropshire Cat Rescue just for a look around. I didn’t intend on adopting another cat right at that moment (honestly!) as it had only been a month since losing my beloved Leo.
Upon setting eyes on Sugar I fell in love. She’s a little older than I was looking for (not that I was actually looking, you understand, honestly!), but she’s just so adorable! She has such a young face with those big eyes and small ears, and she’s so fluffy.
I had to wait nearly a week before I could bring Sugar home as she’d only arrived at the rescue a couple of days previously, so she needed to be vet-checked before being adopted. It was a long week!
Once home (after an hour’s trip of the cat equivalent of “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?”) Sugar settled in straight away. Poor Silky has had her home invaded by another big fluffy cat who has pinched most of her toys and some of our attention. Silky isn’t quite sure what to make of this new cat who keeps chatting to her (Sugar is quite a chatty cat), but they are tolerating each other.
One of the things Sugar was doing in her previous home was urinating where she shouldn’t (as a stress response). So I knew it wasn’t going to be all plain sailing when I brought her home. It took a few days (a new litter box and a new type of cat litter), but she’s now using the litter boxes rather than her or anyone else’s bed (thankfully!).
Sugar seems very settled and happy here. She’s already commandeered most of the cat toys and can be pretty demanding when she wants attention. She’s pretty and she knows it.
So that’s Sugar. I’m sure you’ll be hearing more about her!

She’s beautiful and you can share all you want to about her – I love seeing it! And good for you for taking in an older kitty. Everyone wants kittens (or puppies), so I’m always happy when more “mature” cats are adopted.
How lovely she is. And how lucky for her that she’s found a home with a patient, kind, and experienced cat lady. Congratulations!
Oh Nikki, she is a dazzler! I’ve never seen such lovely, delicate markings. You can tell she has a good deal of personality. And I’m so glad you took in someone a bit older. They need special homes that will love them.

Oh wow…how beautiful she is. Loving those eyes and that look. She is amazing. She now has a stressless home so I hope she continues to do well with her litter box using. I am a fairly new cat owner (almost a yr now), and I was 57 when I gave it a try….now I wonder why I waited so long in life. My Lily is the best. Hi Nikki, Sugar is a beautiful looking cat, and I think she knows how to use it to her advantage. Her eyes look like she won’t miss a trick. She is one very lucky little cat.

Sugar definitely doesn’t look like a ragamuffin cat to me. As a confirmed non-cat person, I never thought I would hear myself saying the words ‘she’s cute’ – so make the most of my one moment!!
Confused and slightly ragamuffin, is the new cat on the block who has decided to use our garden as part of his regular morning stroll. His fur isn’t quite as long as Sugar’s and he is pure white from top to bottom and side to side – until you get to his extremely long tail, which is a golden ginger colour – I have no idea what that’s all about!
It is lovely to hear that you rescued Sugar from a Cat Rescue Centre. So many people want the new ‘designer’ breeds and are willing to pay so much over the odds for the privilege, when there are so many adorable, but homeless feline friends out there, just longing for the kind of home you can offer Sugar.

Thanks for leaving a comment (despite knowing you’re not a fan of cats!).
Despite getting Sugar from a cat rescue charity, she is actually one of these new “designer” breeds (she has a pedigree name and everything)! The Ragamuffin breed is a variant of the Ragdoll breed, but was established as a separate breed in the 1990s. Sugar is a former breeding queen who was re-homed once she’d given the breeders 3 or 4 lots of kittens. Unfortunately, she was re-homed with a family including a kid, 2 dogs and a parrot… Not a quiet household!
I would say it isn’t often you find a pedigree cat at a cat rescue (because when breeders sell kittens the contract usually states the cat is to go back to the breeder if the owner can no longer care for it), however there are some cat rescue places which specifically rescue certain breeds of cats. I think Sugar was the only pedigree cat at the cat rescue when I went… I just fell for her charming good looks!
I think we’ve tackled the house training. She’s not had an “accident” for a week now. *Fingers crossed!*

I had no idea that a ‘Ragamuffin’ was indeed a breed of pedigree cat, so I send my profuse apologies to both yourself and Sugar, there was no slur on her pedigree intended 🙂
It is such a shame that families decide to take on a pet, without the proper knowledge of how to care for them and the impact they are going to have on the animal’s well-being, as much as the demands any pet is going to make on family life.
Luckily you came along and offered the peace and contentment Sugar needs after giving the breeder all those kittens!
I am fine thanks, although I have the big 60th birthday on Friday, so that;s another landmark almost come and gone.

Sugar is absolutely gorgeous! I’m so glad to hear you got another kitty and a rescue too. Those are the best kinds. I hope she is settling in well.. it’s been a good few weeks now, so I really hope she is feeling right at home. I hope to see lots more of Sugar on your blog.. sweet name too 😉
Good grief, how absolutely stunning – poor Silky, I suspect neither you or she ever stood a chance once Sugar fixed those incredible eyes on you.
