Montgomery Castle

Montgomery Castle

Dating back to the 13th century and demolished in the 17th century on the order of Parliament, the ruins of Montgomery Castle stand proud above the old county town.

If you fancy a challenging walk then park in the town and walk (maybe climb is a better word!) up the steep path to the castle. There’s a handy bench when you reach the top of the hill to help settle wobbly legs. Those not up for the challenging walk can park in the castle’s car park. It’s just a short level walk from there to the castle.

The views from the castle are amazing – from Roundton and Corndon Hill by Churchstoke to the roman roads heading to Chirbury and Forden. On a clear day you can see for miles.

Montgomery Castle is just down the road from me. I’m so lucky to have places like this practically on my doorstep. If you’re heading to Mid Wales or even just passing through, I’d definitely recommend visiting.

Back in town there are some lovely little shops to browse. There are pubs and cafes, but if you fancy some posh (and very tasty) nosh then I’d recommend The Checkers, Montgomery, a Michelin star restaurant. However, they’re very popular so I would advise booking in advance!

  1. Hi Nikki,

Great to hear from you again after such a long absence. I thought you might have decided to give up on the blogging, but I am so pleased that you didn’t and I have re-established links to this new address.

Just one small point … the Twitter link at the top of the page doesn’t work … at least not as of Sunday 11th at 6pm.

We are lucky enough to have several castles in various states of ruin, down here in Somerset, so like yourself, we never have to travel far to visit a place of interest and of course we also have many of the major National Trust sites in the area, right on our doorstep.

We quite often venture over the border into Wales, so Montgomery Castle is one for my ‘Places To Visit’ list – yes! I really do have one! – as the views look absolutely stunning and that is perhaps where we miss out a little, as much of Somerset has quite a flat landscape!

Sorry to hear that you haven’t been feeling too good of late, but I hope that you are soon back to your old self and that you get your reading mojo back for some more excellent reviews and recommendations 🙂

    Yvonne

      Hi Yvonne,

Many thanks for visiting. Also, thanks for pointing out the social media links, I’ve sorted those now. I’m sure I’d checked before, but maybe not!

Another castle in the area which I’d recommend is Powis Castle in all its splendour (and just a few miles from Montgomery).
